From our Deputy Principal, Mr David Holland
“Some mums are graceful. And some mums are tough.
And some mums can tell when you’ve borrowed their stuff.
Some mums are fearless. And some give you wings.
And some tell tales of incredible things.”
Bland, N (2015) Some Mums, Scholastic.
This is a short extract from Nick Bland’s picture book Some Mums. In it, he subtly presents the differences between mums, the things that they do, and the unique strengths that they have. He highlights how the things our mums do influence and shape us in wonderful ways. It is a gorgeous book that finishes with the line ‘A day spent with Mum is a wonderful day’.
If you were fortunate enough like me to grow up with a loving, caring mum she is likely to hold one of the most important and special places in your heart. It is our mums that can teach us and model for us (like Christ) the kindness, patience, love, humility and unselfishness that we all need to navigate life in this world. Our mums often know us better than we know ourselves and can have this God-given ability to see us at our worst, love us unconditionally and guide us through whatever trial, dilemma or problem we are facing. Sometimes they do this by walking beside us, sometimes they do this by giving us a gentle nudge in the right direction, and occasionally they lovingly rebuke us in a way that doesn’t sting. They can be our biggest advocates and our greatest cheerleaders. Where would we be without them?
As we come to another Mother’s Day this Sunday, we have a wonderful opportunity to pause, celebrate and show the mums in our lives how much they mean to us. If your mum is like mine, they probably won’t demand a ‘big fuss’, they are simply grateful for being acknowledged and appreciated. They value kind words, small gestures of affection and genuine thanks for ALL they do. As we approach this Mother’s Day, we encourage the students of BCC, and their dads, to plan ahead and have some things ready to show our mums how much we appreciate them. Don’t underestimate the impact of the little things like: kind words, a smile, a well-timed cup of tea, a bunch of flowers, a hug, washing the dishes, tidying the house, going for a walk or telling them plainly – how much they mean to us. Mums are truly awesome and we thank God for our mums!!
To conclude, I just want to acknowledge those community members for whom Mother’s Day can be a tough day. To those that have lost their mums, those whose mums are unwell or fighting illness, those that may be estranged from their mums, and those desperate to be a mum themselves but may be prevented from being so – our thoughts and prayers are with each of you. I lost my mum on the 9th February 2022 to a debilitating and insidious disease. Despite mum no longer being here, there is much to celebrate and reflect on with respect to her life and her being my mum, her faith and what she taught me about Christ most of all.
To all our mums, step-mums, grandma’s, single mums, foster mums etc – we wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day. May you be celebrated, spoiled and honoured in the ways that matter most to you this weekend.
Mr David Holland
Deputy Principal

Opal Card Tap on Tap off
From 24 February to 21 March 2025 Transport for NSW will be focusing on school student Opal tap data to help plan better bus services.
It’s vital that your child remembers to tap on and tap off their Student or Child/Youth Opal card during this time – and every time they travel by bus.
Why is tapping on and off on the bus important?
The use of Opal cards is the primary way bus operators and Transport for NSW analyse demand for bus services. When students don’t use their Opal cards, their trip is not recorded. Therefore, buses may appear underutilised. Tapping on and off provides better data to plan better bus services.
How can you help?
Please remind your child to tap on and off and ensure your child has a valid Opal card (either a School or Child/Youth Opal card). To apply for a school Opal card, visit https://transportnsw.info/school-travel-apply.
Students may see onboard bus posters and Busways Community Relation Officers at afternoon loadings.
Together let’s get students into good habits of tapping on and tapping off with their Opal card.

Parliament and Civics Education Rebate
Students from our College have recently undertaken an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $30 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate was paid directly to the College upon completion of the excursion.

Year 8 Steps into the World of the Inca Empire
This week, our Year 8 students had the incredible opportunity to explore the Machu Picchu exhibition in Sydney, where they came face-to-face with over 130 ancient artefacts. The collection featured everything from intricate jewellery and funerary objects from royal tombs to one of the most impressive touring displays of ancient gold in the world.
This immersive experience brought history to life in a vivid and memorable way, perfectly complementing their current HSIE studies on the Spanish Conquest of the Americas. A truly golden opportunity to learn beyond the classroom!

Under 15 Girls AFL
Our Under 15 girls participated in the AFL Junior Schools Cup in Teralba on Thursday, 1 April, and they absolutely shined! The group of 18 girls from different year groups came together as a team with their goals being to encourage, communicate, outwork their opponents and play with full commitment. They did all of this well as a team finishing first place for the day with a 4-0 record while outscoring their opponents 136-6.
It was a dominant performance by the midfield producing clearance after clearance. The wings outran their direct opponents all day, and there were 12 girls who contributed by scoring a goal. The athletic ability and fitness of the girls was evident as they didn’t slow down in their pressure and intensity all day. When the other teams had the ball, it wasn’t long before they were being tackled by a BCC player.
For the Year 7 girls, this was their first opportunity to represent the College at the Secondary level. They were nervous before the games began, but it was beautiful to see the Year 9 girls take them under their wings and lead them by their positive example with knowledge and encouragement. The leadership combined with the talent allowed the Year 7 girls to compete on the field with confidence and determination. They came together to make several great plays including a number of goals.
It was a wonderful day for the team as far as their results, but even more impressive was how they competed hard, with character and class. Congratulations Girls!

Huge Congratulations to Mr Hall
We are so proud to share that Mark Hall has officially qualified for the Ironman World Championships, to be held in Nice, France this September. This incredible milestone marks the fulfilment of a 27-year personal dream—a journey shaped by perseverance, discipline, and a deep trust in God’s strength and provision.
Mr Hall competed in Ironman Australia in Port Macquarie last weekend, receiving Legend Bib #10-418 for his 11th Ironman. The race was dramatically altered when the swim leg was cancelled due to poor conditions, turning it into a duathlon. While disappointed, he reset his mindset and launched into a strong bike leg, fuelled by determination (and a lot of PURE Sports Nutrition!).
Despite a challenging marathon, including cramps and fading legs mid-race, Mark found renewed strength in a simple mantra from his daughter: “Change your mindset.” With fresh energy and remarkable grit, he pushed through the final 10km, passing runners and crossing the finish line!
This was more than just a race; it was a personal victory years in the making. We thank God for how He has sustained and equipped Mr Hall, and we celebrate this inspiring moment with him.
Congratulations, Mr Hall! Your BCC family is cheering you on all the way to the World Championships!
